Madeira Sweet Aged 10 Years

It is said that the first grapes that arrived in Madeira island were brought from both the Northern lands of Portugal and the kingdom of Candia in the island of Crete and that it was their amazing growth that prompted the locals to start producing wine.

Today all Madeira Wine starts with one of 8 specific castes of grape: Sercial, Malvazia, Boal, Tinta Negra, Bastardo, Verdelho, Moscatel or Terrantez.

"FROM THE NEED TO PRESERVE WINE DURING LONG TRIPS ACROSS THE ATLANTIC AND THE HEAT INSIDE THOSE VESSELS AS THEY CROSSED THE EQUADOR CAME THE MADEIRA WINE”

As it became too expensive to send boats across the sea for the production of Madeira Wine, the producers soon found that they could achieve the same results by increasing the alcoholic volume of the wine and providing the aged barrels with other forms of heat, thus creating the heating processes known as “Canteiro” where the barrels are left at the sun to be heated and “Estufagem” where the wine is kept heated at a constant temperature for months inside huge chambers fueled by wood or coal in the cold days.

However, it was the aging of the Madeira Wines that made them remarkable in every way. So in order to preserve them, new Barrels some of them as big as small houses were built to store the wine properly for longer periods of time.

Also by making use of cork and blackened glass for the bottling process allowed the wine to be preserved and sold decades after it was produced.
It’s this legacy of storage, preservation and decades of aging for wines that D’Oliveiras has been carrying since 1850.
